The many different varieties of Calathea are known for their expressive patterned leaves. Calathea plants have a reputation for being finicky but in proper conditions, these plants will reward you with fast growth, endless leaves and can be a low maintenance addition to your plant jungle.
General care: Calatheas like an environment with higher humidity (like a kitchen or bathroom) and their soil to stay consistently moist. This is not a drought-tolerant plant, but it is relatively forgiving if you forget to water it from time to time. Extended periods of dryness can result in brown leaf tips or edges.
Water: High water needs. Water regularly and keep soil moist, not wet or soggy. For best results, maintain a regular watering schedule and keep your Calathea moist, but not wet or soggy.
Sunlight: Low to medium indirect light. As a rule, the darker the foliage—such as with the calathea ornata—the lower the light requirements. Too much sun will bleach the leaves.
Placement: Calathea prefers a spot with ample humidity. A kitchen or bathroom are perfect spots, or try placing a humidifier nearby.
Pets and Kids: All Calathea varieties non-toxic and are pet and kid-friendly!
